A Wall Comes Down

It was 20 years ago today that the Berlin Wall fell. I was 8.

I don’t actually remember if I noticed at the time. I was in grade 3. My dad’s plant had been locked out, and then on strike for almost 2 years and he was working as a pizza delivery guy.
I may have my timeline wrong; perhaps my dad had already moved to Kincardine for a job at the nuclear plant. I don’t know. I know the rest of us moved up in April, but at the time, my years were not divided into mere months, but into markers like summer, back-to-school, winter, Christmas, and my birthday. Perhaps they told me, perhaps they were too busy trying to put food on the table to explain far-way world events to an 8 year old who was too busy cutting out paper bats to listen/care.

What I do remember of The Wall actually occurred about a year later. I remember a Captain Planet episode, where there was this guy who thought the Cold War was still going on, and the Planeteers had to show him pictures of the Wall coming down before he would believe them. I don’t remember exactly what was said, but I came away from the show with the impression that the wall was a Bad Thing put there by Bad People, and now it was gone because it had been Wrong. I didn’t quite grasp that it had just happened. I imagine that I figured it happened in the BC era (“Before Caitlin”), as did all World Bad Things, like the war my grandpa fought in.

I didn’t grasp it until my grade 9 geography teacher pointed out, 5 years later in a lesson on European geography, that the wall fell “in our lifetime”. I remember what ripped jeans (covered in trendy patches) I was wearing. I remember being awed and horrified that something like that was allowed to happen at all, let alone happen in the late 80s. The world was supposed to be safe, and somehow, a mere 5 years ago, it wasn’t. It isn’t.

It was a huge paradigm shift.

Am I Famous Yet?

Last night and I went to the open house info session on the new composting facility they are proposing for Guelph.

The open house itself was pretty good, and the people there were able to actually answer questions we had. They also had fancy food out, so we had some excellent cheesecake. Yum!

Now we’re quoted in the Guelph Mercury paper!
http://news.guelphmercury.com/News/article/537403

Resident Theresa Smith said having to wait until 2011 “seems like a long time for the city to go without composting facilities.”

But she and fellow resident Caitlin Thompson said they were pleased with the planning details they saw Tuesday.

“We’re looking forward to having a (municipal composting) facility,” Thompson said.

Grumble Grumble

Well, I voted, but it didn’t really have the desired result.

The Conservatives seem to be headed toward another minority government. Good job, guys, way to spend money on an election (and get all our hopes up) to have the same lame result as before.

They did manage to increase their minority, but it’s still a minority government, so there will be another election before too long.

One of these years, we’re actually going to elect a leader I can be proud of again.

Yet Another Election

I had forgotten all about Hockey Night in Canada losing it’s theme song a while back. Now the voting for the replacement has narrowed it down to two. I can’t really decide which one I like better, but I think it’s #1.

Votes close at 11:59 tonight, and then we’ll find out tomorrow which ones will be the new Hockey Night in Canada song.

It’ll be really weird to hear another song during that time. And I don’t even watch hockey!

Holy Shit, Toronto Exploded!

(photo credit to: for-news on LJ)

So at like 4 am today, a building at Keele/Wilson area exploded! I’ve heard it was a propane depot (Sunrise Propane?). I used to live at Jane/Finch (two city blocks Northwest) and go to the York University campus!!
People downtown (~an hour away by subway/bus) were seeing and photographing the explosions as they happened.

(big explosion at 1:50)

The TTC was called in to bus evacuees from the area to the Yorkdale mall.
No known fatalities, 3 (I think) injuries. Pretty damn good if you ask me.

Lots of photos over at Torontophoto on LJ and on Flickr

According to HoTornotGossip.com, police are suspecting foul play.

Pet Food Recall Update

Turns out, it was rat poison.

ALBANY, New York (AP) — Rat poison was found in pet food blamed for the deaths of at least 16 cats and dogs, but scientists said Friday they still don’t know how it got there and predicted more animal deaths would be linked to it.

Also Friday, the company that produced the food expanded its recall to include all 95 brands of the “cuts and gravy” style food, regardless of when they were produced.

The substance in the food was identified as aminopterin, a cancer drug that once was used to induce abortions in the United States and is still used to kill rats in some other countries, state Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker said.

The federal government prohibits using aminopterin for killing rodents in the United States. State officials would not speculate on how the poison got into the pet food, but said no criminal investigations had been launched.

The pet deaths led to a recall of 60 million cans and pouches of dog and cat food produced by Menu Foods and sold throughout North America under 95 brand names. Some pets that ate the recalled brands suffered kidney failure, and the company has confirmed the deaths of 15 cats and one dog.

Pet Food Recall

I don’t think anyone who reads this blog would buy any of these for their pets, but I’m passing it along anyway:

Article snippet:

Pet owners were worried Saturday that the pet food in their cupboards could be deadly after millions of containers of dog and cat food sold at major retailers across North America were recalled.

Menu Foods — a major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands — recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, the company said in announcing the North American recall.

Here’s the list of recalled brand names:
